Step one: stop the onslaught.
You don’t need to bin everything, but you do need to strip things back. Think of this as a skincare sabbatical. A few weeks of TLC can make a world of difference.
1. Go Back to Basics
Use a gentle, hydrating cleanser—one without foaming agents, fragrance or exfoliating acids. Follow with a simple moisturiser packed with ceramides, fatty acids and humectants like glycerin or hyaluronic acid. That’s it.
Do this consistently for a week or two. Let your skin breathe. If your face feels a bit boring during this time, you’re doing it right.
2. Pause the Actives
Put your retinoids, vitamin C and exfoliants on pause. Once your barrier feels calm and resilient again, you can slowly reintroduce them—just not all at once. Start with one, once or twice a week, and see how your skin responds.
3. Lock in Moisture
Moisturisers are key here. Look for formulas with ceramides, squalane, niacinamide, cholesterol and panthenol. These are your barrier’s best friends.
Try layering a hydrating serum (like hyaluronic acid or polyglutamic acid) underneath your moisturiser to really seal the deal.
4. Use SPF, Always
A weakened barrier is even more vulnerable to UV damage. A gentle, non-comedogenic SPF is essential—even on cloudy days.
Look for mineral (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) sunscreens if your skin is sensitive. They’re less likely to cause irritation than chemical filters.
5. Avoid Over-Cleansing
Cleansing more than twice a day, or using harsh formulas, can strip your skin’s natural oils. Stick to lukewarm water and keep your cleansing routine short and sweet.
