    Save to Favourites

Pubic hair chat has been hitting the mainstream media heavily in the last few years - we seem to all be discussing what we’re doing in our southern regions as if we’re talking about our new favourite lipgloss and honestly, I’m so glad that we’re all here for it!

There’s nothing icky about discussing what we’re doing with our “lady gardens” - after all, pubic hair has always gone through different trends and let us show our personalities in a more private way. So, what’s in now? Is it strimming season or are we letting the bush grow naturally?

Well, we’re here to take a look at the most popular pubic hair trends out there, giving you tips along the way for each style, and also help you embrace your bush fully if that’s what you’re going for, by giving you advice on how to soften pubic hair. So, let’s go forward and start rocking pubic hair that we’re proud of!

the 4 most popular pubic hair styles

From copper razors at the time of the Ancient Greeks to the au naturel revolution of the 1970s, there have been many pubic hair trends through the ages.

Whilst how you style, maintain, and groom your pubic hair should only ever be a personal choice, if you’re wanting to know a little more about popular styles out there, let’s take a look at the 4 most common: why not have some fun and try them all out?

    bare

The “Bare”, or “Hollywood” style is exactly as it sounds - you remove all of your pubic hair, including round the back too! Most commonly this is achieved by waxing, but shaving can achieve the same results too - you might just want to make sure you follow the tips on how to keep your pubic hair soft (below!) if you’re going down the shaving route since grow-back can be a little prickly!

    landing strip

The “Landing Strip”, also known as the “French wax”, is a style that removes the hair from everywhere apart from a rectangular shape section on the front of the vulva. You can easily achieve this style by shaving, but if you are going to go for a “French” wax, it’s customary to also not wax around the back, so if you’re looking for that, you may need to add it on as an extra!

why is pubic hair so coarse?

Whether you want to feel softer between shaves or you’re wanting to grow your pubic hair out completely, softening your pubic hair is a great thing to do! But, why do we have to do it? Why is pubic hair so coarse in the first place?

Well, dermatologist Marc Glashofer suggests that although there’s no definite reasoning behind why pubic hair is so coarse, it tends to be thicker than other body hair due to the fact that it acts as a buffer during sex.

In fact, letting your pubic hair grow naturally is one of the safest ways to style it: pubic hair can lessen any friction during sex and can even reduce the likelihood of abrasion or rashes.

Although pubic hair might naturally be more coarse, you might want to soften your prickly pubic hair if you’re growing it out - it might get a little itchy or uncomfortable otherwise.

So, want to know how to keep pubic hair soft?

    how to soften pubic hair

    1. trim on a regular basis

Whilst you may want to let your pubic hair go wild, there are actually some benefits to keeping it slightly more trim. Don’t worry, you can still let your hair grow out as far as you’d like, but giving it a little trim every so often can reduce the likelihood of irritation. You don’t need to use a razor (this could actually cause irritation itself if your hair is long). Instead, using a pair of sharp scissors, do a small trim when you notice things are getting a little itchy.

    2. use a pubic hair conditioner

Using a pubic hair conditioner can soften your hair, just as the conditioner you use on the hair on your head does! You can actually use your normal hair conditioner on your pubic hair if that works for you, or you can splash out on a pubic-hair-specific conditioning product such as the famous Fur Oil.

    3. apply vitamin e oil

Vitamin E oil can be incredibly powerful when it comes to softening pubic hair. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that boosts hair elasticity and nourishes the hair and the root. Additionally, vitamin E promotes blood circulation and hair growth, so if you’re looking to grow more soft pubic hair, apply a light application of vitamin E oil to your pubic hair area once a week.

    4. exfoliate & moisturise

Whether you’re trimming, shaving, or growing your pubic hair out without any maintenance, exfoliating and moisturizing can help you from getting ingrown hairs, reduces the likelihood of any nasty bumps, and softens the existing hair. Just as you wouldn’t exfoliate any other area of your body on an overly regular basis, you don’t need to overdo it when it comes to exfoliating your pubic hair. See what works for you, but don’t exfoliate more than once a week.

    5. supplement with biotin

As well as helping the growth of the hair on top of our heads, biotin, or hair and nail supplements that contain biotin, such as Vida Glow’s Hairology, can help to stimulate and support pubic hair growth. This is due to the fact that biotin directly stimulates keratin production and can increase the rate of follicle growth. It also impacts hair texture and supports thicker, softer hair.

    6. wear good underwear

Although wearing specific underwear might not directly make your pubic hair softer, wearing the wrong underwear can cause friction on your pubic hair and make you itchy! So, stick to cotton, breathable pubic-hair-friendly underwear: yes, it’s time to ditch the tight nylon thong!

Whatever you choose to do with your pubic hair is completely your choice and although it may seem trivial to some, how we style and maintain our pubic hair can actually help us step into an empowering light.

It’s time to say goodbye to outdated beliefs about what we should look like down there and hello to doing whatever the hell we want!

So, go and enjoy your lady garden, whether you’re getting the trimmers out or letting things grow wildly.
