    WHAT IS CBD?

“What’s in my bag” videos are an extremely popular category on YouTube, and one of my favourite ones. I’m obsessed with the opportunity to get a sneak peek into the real, daily, tangible everyday lives of complete strangers, and consider these videos… somewhat relaxing? Please tell me I’m not alone. Anyway, I recently watched a “What’s in my carry-on when I fly” video and was surprised to see an item pop up that I might not have seen that often: a CBD oil stick.

The youtuber in question explained she uses it on her neck and wrists when she flies, as airports make her anxious and CBD helps enormously. I was intrigued, so I got to researching. What I discovered is that CBD is a very different beast from the image of “weed” I might have conjured up from movies or Miley Cyrus’ antics circa 2013. It can be used safely, daily, and completely stress-free. Could it really be that easy?

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is an active ingredient derived from hemp or cannabis plants. It differs from tetrahydrocannabinol (THC,) the main psychoactive present in cannabis causing the famous “high,” as CBD does not dramatically alter your state in the same way, nor is it in any way addictive. As such, is it non-psychoactive and completely legal in the UK, as long as it has been “derived from an industrial hemp strain that is EU-approved." In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential,” states a report from the World Health Organization. “To date, there is no evidence of public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD."

what are the benefits of cbd?

There is strong scientific evidence that CBD can help with a variety of health issues, from anxiety and insomnia to chronic pain, addiction, and even childhood epilepsy syndrome: in 2018, in the United States, a CBD-based medication called Epidiolex made history as the first cannabis-derived medicine approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, two rare and severe forms of epilepsy. Elsewhere in the world, the prescription drug Sativex, which contains CBD as an active ingredient, is used to treat muscle spasticity associated with multiple sclerosis and for cancer pain.

The pain relieving effects of CBD are brought on by its ability to interact with the endocannabinoid system, in charge of regulating a variety of functions including sleep, appetite, pain sensation, and immune system response. Studies have shown its effectiveness in reducing anxiety and anxiety-like symptoms, and this remains the most prevalent use of CBD products: 51% of U.S. adults who use CBD do so to help alleviate their anxiety

Athletic people might be familiar with delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS,) the classic set of muscle aches and pains that comes with going for a run without stretching properly, exercising for the first time after a long break, or even a slightly too intense workout after another. A clinical trial showed that CBD was effective at relieving post-exercise joint stiffness and muscle tension in over 97% of participants. This is because it helps relax muscles, which alleviates tension and reduces inflammation, as well as supporting faster recovery between workouts or following injury.

CBD comes in several different forms, both oral and topical, such as oils, lotions, capsules, extracts, patches, pills, gummies or sprays. In a hilarious twist to its popular rise in recent years, it’s been added to cheeseburgers, toothpicks and breath sprays. Of course, the “unreliability of the purity and dosage of CBD in products” is a common concern: you could be using something with less CBD than advertised, and not see any benefits, or more, and perhaps get side effects such as a dry mouth or a feeling of drowsiness. That’s why it’s important to buy from reputable sources, and why we love APOTHEM.

We’re super proud to stock APOTHEM products, so let’s find out a little bit more about them.

    why apothem?

APOTHEM is a premium CBD brand making thoughtful, high-quality CBD products inspired by plants and designed for real life. GQ calls them “an absolute favourite,” thanks to an “impressive commitment to setting industry standards around quality,” and we agree! They have high standards, produce safe, potent and effective formulas, and they’ve won the Pure Beauty Awards 2020 for Best New British Brand and Best New Wellness Product.

what cbd products should you start with?

Amelia, APOTHEM’s co-founder and CEO, swears by the DEFENCE drops as part of her daily ritual. “The botanicals used in the blend have been well-used for centuries thanks to their powerful immune-boosting properties,” she explains, “and are paired with CBD which we know to support our body’s endocannabinoid system and help bring us back into homeostasis.”

how to incorporate cbd into your daily life?

Wondering what this means, in real and practical terms? Although it depends on the individual, and it’s always important to find the perfect combination of products that works for you and your needs, it’s actually a lot simpler than it sounds.

You could try taking CBD supplements when you wake up in the morning, to make them part of your daily breakfast ritual and start your day with a bit of an energy boost: DAY CBD oil drops help you balance your frame of mind and find a sense of inner calm.

Perhaps you can add a serving to your morning tea or coffee, or use a moisturising CBD balm or body oil as part of your skincare routine. For this purpose, SCULPT is perfect for giving weary skin some love: an uplifting body oil combining pure cbd, invigorating green coffee, detoxifying birch, and nourishing moringa seed oil.

It can even be effective for hay fever: “I use the DEFENCE drops when I need an energy boost, if I’m feeling under the weather, and especially during hay fever season,” says Amelia. “If needed, I pop some MULTI balm around the nose too. It catches any pollen particles and brings much relief.”

    cbd for recovery & relief

Are you an intense workout kind of person? A CBD-based muscle rub might be the key to sweet, sweet relief for you and your muscles: RECHARGE combines pure Hemp-CBD with repairing arnica, antioxidant green tea and soothing magnesium. This therapeutic cream-gel delivers a cooling remedy to help target tension and re-energise overworked bodies.

Additionally, since athletes need to keep their immune system up to speed, immune-boosting CBD drops can help fend off sickness and aid recovery. DEFENCE is formulated to protect and balance the body from within, with renowned wellness boosters echinacea, elderberry, shiitake, and astragalus to strengthen the immune system and help fend off sickness, while inflammation-easing CBD and ginger help fight seasonal symptoms and support recovery.

cbd for sleep & evening support

Maybe you prefer using CBD to unwind at the end of the day: in that case, CBD bath salts are perfect for unplugging and finishing your workday on a relaxing high (pun absolutely intended.) Many people love CBD for its sleep-inducing effect, as we live in a hyper connected hustle-focused society and switching off is harder than ever.

There’s CBD drops to calm your mind and release any tension, to help you fall asleep faster and more peacefully: LIGHTS OUT was created to help you reclaim deep sleep, blending the purest, high strength CBD with soothing l-theanine, potent reishi, calming chamomile, and regulating botanicals, all wrapped up with the soothing natural flavours of vanilla and caramel.

cbd for endometriosis, pms & menopause

Menstrual cramps are never fun, but CBD can help make them less painful: CBD based creams and lotions (RECHARGE, MULTI) can be applied directly to the abdomen for pain relief, and as PMS induces stressful and even depressive-like symptoms, CBD drops can be used to help with this condition.

Endometriosis, which is thought to affect around 10% of the female population, has been described as an “endocannabinoid deficiency” condition. As CBD has the potential to help activate receptors, promoting the pain regulation aspect of the endocannabinoid system, regular use of CBD products can be beneficial.

Menopause, as well, is known to exacerbate insomnia, cause joint pain, and cause disruptive stress, so calming CBD products can be used for sleepfulness and stress, while topical CBD products can be extremely helpful in alleviating muscle pain.

    the bottom line

Now that you know a little bit more about CBD and its uses, you can get started trying to find the perfect combination of products that works for you and your specific needs. APOTHEM also has a great guide to CBD and its benefits, and more resources on their website. Remember, each product page includes a recommendation on CBD dosage, and full ingredient list, because CBD is perfectly safe but dosage and provenance is always important. We love APOTHEM because they sell products with organically cultivated hemp, containing no heavy metals and zero THC, that are vegan and cruelty-free. What’s not to love?
